MAPPING THE DIASPORA
Hālau and civic groups that appear on Nā Lei Hilo's interactive map represent organizations across the continental U.S. that are committed to the perpetuation and advancement of Native Hawaiian culture, history, language, and more. Longstanding historical traumas have muddied this crucial mission. As a result, some organizations on our map have appeared less authoritative or legitimate than others, especially in areas with limited access to vital cultural resources. We are aligned with the efforts codified in the Huamakahikina Declaration, which attempts to preserve and protect the integrity of hula, and have identified and champion its signatory schools on our map so Nā Lei Hilo visitors have a complete view of resources across the Native Hawaiian diaspora. We hope this map and other efforts at Nā Lei Hilo continue to uplift, challenge, propel, and connect Native Hawaiians wherever they reside.
